EDMONTON — Police cordoned off a west Edmonton school yard Tuesday night after shots were fired near a group of young men playing basketball.

No one was hurt in the shooting, which happened about 8 p.m. next to Belmead Elementary school, said Sgt. Mitch Flaman.

Flaman said witnesses told police they heard at least three shots, then saw a group of young people scatter.

“When we got here, we stopped one vehicle that we believe was involved, likely as the target of the gunshots,” he said. “And we’re speaking to those people.”

Daniele, who asked that her last name not be used, was watching her daughter play soccer on the field behind the school when she heard the shots.

Seconds later, three young men bolted towards them from the basketball court below, she said. She heard one say, “They’re not joking, they’ve got guns.”

Daniele’s friend, Blair, was sitting in his backyard up the road from the school when he and his fiancee heard the shots.

As they leaned over their fence, they could see cars peeling out of the school parking lot and driving away.

“It’s getting crazy here,” said Blair, who didn’t want his last name used. “We moved here five years ago and it wasn’t that bad back then.”

More than an hour after the gunfire investigators were still combing the taped-off grass next to the basketball court.

Flaman said they had no idea yet what kind of gun was used, what prompted the incident or who might have been involved.

He did say police were looking for an older model four-door car that was seen leaving the area.

“We don’t know how many people were in the car,” he said. “We certainly know it was more than one occupant. But we don’t have any further information right now.”
